Making existing space work again
Not every new home needs to be newly built. Sometimes existing buildings already contain space that can be used more intelligently.
In Apeldoorn, we acquired a large apartment that originally consisted of two numbers. Rather than retain one very large home, we restored that original division. This creates two smaller apartments in a place where that type of home is needed.
Developing from what is already there
We find this an interesting form of development: not building bigger because we can, but considering what makes sense in that location for the people who will eventually live there.
The building itself, a former serviced apartment block, is being modernised step by step. Its owners’ association is working on sustainability while also exploring how additional homes can be created within the existing building.
A healthier basis for the building
More homes do not only create more living space; they can also help spread shared building costs across more owners. Better use of existing square metres, smaller homes, sustainability improvements and a healthier basis for the owners’ association come together here.
This may be less spectacular than constructing an entirely new building. Yet we believe existing buildings still hold considerable potential for housing, if you look closely at what is already there.
